Guide the Next Generation of Readers & Leaders

Share the gift of reading and help change a child's future!

Childhood illiteracy is a predictor of adult poverty. If a child is not reading proficiently by the fourth grade, they are four times less likely to graduate high school. Students we serve are reading one to two years below grade level and benefit greatly from an older adult tutor engaging with them one-on-one to develop their reading fluency and confidence.

Parentis Foundation's Experience Corps Orange County program is currently recruiting volunteer tutors for the 2024-2025 school year. Volunteer tutors, age 50 and over, bring a willingness to share their experience, time, and love of reading. The desire to help young struggling readers achieve reading level proficiencies, and beyond, is all that is required. We will provide all the training and on-going support to help tutors thrive.

Tutors typically work with 2-3 children, grades first through fifth, meeting with them individually twice each week for a 30-minute session. Experience Corps OC partners with many local schools and afterschool programs and both in-person and virtual (via Zoom) tutoring opportunities are available.

Mission Statement

To address a major contributor to poverty: the inability of children to read proficiently by the end of third grade.

Description

Our flagship program Experience Corps Orange County* is a community-based volunteer program that engages highly trained people over the age of 50, as tutors to help students become better readers by the end of third grade. It is a proven "triple win," helping students to succeed, older adults to thrive, and communities to grow stronger. Parentis Foundation changes lives by positively and significantly impacting both our older adult volunteers and the future generation of young readers.
