ACES stands for Augmentative Communication Empowerment and Supports.

ACES is a one-week intensive program for young adult users (18+ years) of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), located on the main campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

ACES 2025 will run from Sunday, July 20 - Friday, July 25, 2025.

Program Goals

The program goals of ACES include:

  • Improve effective communication by AAC users by participating in daily Communication classes led by Speech-language Pathologists
  • Explore and participate in Adaptive recreation and leisure activities
  • Develop a network of support and community with other AAC users and their family
  • Experience living, learning, and navigating a college campus
  • Practice AAC use across a variety of activities, settings, and individuals
  • Support in AAC device programming, backups, and operation for families and staff
  • Increase the capacity of non-AAC users to engage and include AAC users in all activities authentically.

Participants

Each ACES participant...

  • Is a young adult or adult who uses AAC.
    • May be concentrating on a "transition" such as school to work, home to community, etc.
  • Is currently using a speech-generating device:
    • Devices (Tobii- Dynavox, PRC, Tablet-based, Phone-based, etc.)
    • Access methods (direct select, eye gaze, switches, etc.)
  • Is able to participate in a full day of learning and activities.
  • Might have a variety of educational or medical diagnoses.

  • ACES needs one mentor for each 1-2 participants
  • You must be at least 18 years old to be a volunteer. You must also have graduated from High School.
  • Flexible scheduling; various shifts available, including morning, afternoon, and evening
  • Attend Volunteer Orientation anticipated early July 2025 (TBD) or complete approved comparable preparation.
  • Support assigned and unassigned participants during ACES on-campus with various tasks.
  • Engage with, include, and support participants in conversations, group discussions, etc. (i.e., ensure all participants’ voices are heard)
  • Attend and participate in ACES courses or activities, under the direction of ACES staff, as assigned and appropriate
  • Follow through on commitments on time
    • Attend all ACES activities assigned during scheduled volunteer hours. Volunteers are required to inform ACES staff at least 24 hours in advance of any changes to the committed schedule.

Description

ACES is a program for young adult users of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) located on the main campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
ACES is a two-week intensive program followed by monthly meetups and ongoing social media engagement. This summer, ACES will run from July 16 - July 28, 2023.
