ORGANIZATION: Queens Community House

Queens Community House’s Friendly Visiting Program seeks volunteers to provide thoughtful and engaging weekly phone calls to isolated older adults with range of interests, hobbies, religious and political beliefs. Visits can be either in person or via phone.

This client is 78 years old and grew up in Jamaica, Queens. She's still living in her family's home in Jamaica, so she's seen the area change and grow greatly throughout the years. She's a huge Mets fan, and loves watching college basketball. She also loves Broadway shows. She'd love to have a weekly female visitor to chat with. Sandra has a small 4-month-old puppy in her home, so visitors must be okay with pets. For someone, this would be heaven!

To become a friendly visitor, you will have to complete an application and some other paperwork, provide two personal/professional references, consent to a background check, interview and then complete a 90-minute training. The process can take two to four weeks. There is short weekly reporting about your visits or phone calls and phone check-ins with the staff every three months. We ask that you commit to at least six months once the right match is found for you.
