Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking a Direct Support Aide to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at St. Edmond's Home for Children in Bryn Mawr from September 2023-July 2024.


Service Description: AmeriCorps members will be working with other Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in the Residential Department. DSPs are supported by Supervisors who both supervise and work hands-on with children. Service members will be responsible for assisting with all levels of the children’s activities of daily living, in addition to the implementation of the individualized programming goals. Within these activities, and the many others that the staff perform on a daily basis, DSPs exemplify St. Edmond’s core values by encouraging and assisting each child to reach their fullest potential of independence.


Mission Statement:St. Edmond's Home for Children provides an exceptional holistic outcome-oriented plan of care for youth and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. They offer a broad spectrum of medical nursing and therapeutic services to assist youth and adults to successfully navigate mental, psychological, and physical challenges amidst both on and off campus activities and interactions.


Responsibilities: The AmeriCorpsDirect Support Professional will support and serve by assisting and facilitating with Health, Safety, and Recreational activities:

Recreational:

  • Assist in development, planning, and implementation of educational, vocational, or recreational activities for youth, adults, or children residing at the facility.
  • Aid staff in conducting physical exercise, occupational arts and crafts, and recreational games.
  • Coordinate and attend community outings with residents to ensure their safety and return.
  • Converse with residents to reinforce positive behaviors and promote social interaction.

Health + Safety:

  • Assist with the daily living tasks (bathing, grooming, and dressing) to promote good self-care.
  • Develop strategies to ensure quality of service in a safe and stimulating environment.
  • Attend to routine health care needs of residents under supervision of medical personnel.
  • Observe and document residents' behavior to facilitate assessment of treatment goals.


Qualifications:

We invite applications from individuals who are over 18 and have work experience or a college education. A high school diploma is required unless the applicant is enrolled in a GED program while serving and completes his or her GED by the end of the year of service.

Applicants should also possess:

  • The willingness to spend a year in the service of others.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptive, and work on a team.
  • U.S. citizenship or be a lawful permanent resident.
  • Commitment to serve as a full-time volunteer for 11 months.


AmeriCorps Benefits:

  • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance of $17,600.
  • The Education Award: Upon completion of an 11 month service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of approximately $7,395. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education at a Title IV institution.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, he or she does not make payments on his or her qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.
  • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional healthcare while you serve with NDA.
  • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
