Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking a Food Pantry Program Assistant to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at Lutheran Settlement House in Fishtown from September 2023-July 2024.


Service Description: Support LSH’s food cupboard and nutrition programming which collects and distributes shelf stable food and produce to clients across LSH as well as provides healthy cooking and nutrition classes to clients at Jane Addams Place and in the Senior Community Center.


Mission: Established in 1902, Lutheran Settlement House (LSH) is a non-profit, community-based organization committed to serving vulnerable children, adults, and families living in Philadelphia. Over the past century, the programs and services offered by LSH have changed in response to the evolving needs of the community. However, the core mission of Lutheran Settlement House --"to empower individuals, families, and communities to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency through an integrated program of social, educational, and advocacy services"-- has remained constant.


Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with pantry volunteers to track and organize all incoming donations
  • Monitor pantry conditions ensuring that refrigerator and freezer temperatures are appropriate and area is sanitary
  • Maintain and update all documentation and information in our agency database for our cupboard suppliers and clients
  • Facilitate regular distribution of food supplies to clients including the seasonal choice pantry and farm stand; providing superior customer service
  • Plan and facilitate Thanksgiving food distribution
  • Support both general and holiday-specific food drives
  • Outreach to the surrounding community; including coordination with other local food programs and tabling at outreach events
  • Plan and facilitate monthly community meals by coordinating with a sponsor or preparing the meal with support of other staff and volunteers
  • Provide nutrition information, food access and program updates, and recipes for foods in the pantry to clients and for the senior community center newsletter
  • Maintain and update nutrition information on the healthy cooking and nutrition resource bulletin board/resource area
  • Reduce food waste by ensuring that food is being distributed prior to expiration dates and that produce and perishable items are properly stored and rotated
  • Complete monthly reports for food suppliers and funders


Qualifications:

We invite applications from individuals who are over 18 and have work experience or a college education. A high school diploma is required unless the applicant is enrolled in a GED program while serving and completes his or her GED by the end of the year of service.

Applicants should also possess:

  • The willingness to spend a year in the service of others.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptive, and work on a team.
  • U.S. citizenship or be a lawful permanent resident.
  • Commitment to serve as a full-time volunteer for 11 months.


AmeriCorps Benefits:

  • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance of $17,600.
  • The Education Award: Upon completion of an 11 month service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of approximately $7,395. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education at a Title IV institution.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, he or she does not make payments on his or her qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.
  • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional healthcare while you serve with NDA.
  • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
