Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking applicants to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at Saint Martin de Porres Academy in New Haven, CT from September 2024-July 2025.

Saint Martin de Porres Academy is an independent faith-based school located in New Haven, Connecticut close to the Yale University Campus. Our school is tuition free and provides a holistic, college-oriented academic curriculum for under-served children from low-income families. We serve children of all faiths, races and cultures through a 10-hour school day and an 11-month school year. Peace and non-violence education are an integral part of our curriculum. Every student plays an instrument. Our unique emphasis on experiential learning coupled with a 12-year commitment to each student helps to break the cycle of poverty, one precious child at a time.

The Fellow's primary responsibilities will be as a Student Support Aide in classes with a Master Teacher. Through this unique classroom environment, Fellows will gain invaluable experience, which at times may include Lead Teaching. Fellows will receive comprehensive training with ongoing support and professional development. Fellows facilitate our Enrichment Offerings...by coaching sports, facilitating arts and service activities, and chaperoning field trips in addition to assisting with major areas of school life. The entire atmosphere is one of collaboration, support and mutual learning.

Primary Duties:

  • Teacher Assistance and, at times, Lead Teaching
  • Coach sports and coordinate arts and/or service enrichment activities
  • Supervise recess, meals and academic hall
  • Chaperone field trips
  • Attend ongoing professional development, retreats and staff meetings
  • Support Mission of the school wherever needed
  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Driver’s License Preferred

Compensation:

  • $17,600 AmeriCorps Living Stipend
  • Free Medical Insurance
  • Federal Food Allowance- Child Care Subsidy
  • Loan Forbearance with interest paid for (On Applicable Loans - Mostly Federal Loans)
  • AmeriCorps Educational Award of $7,395
  • SMPA Subsidized Housing ($300 per month)
  • Opportunity to apply for Extended Service = Free Master’s Degree @ Fairfield University or Sacred Heart University years 3-5

AmeriCorps Member Benefits:

  • Subsidized housing offered by the site
  • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance which is distributed bi-weekly over the 11 months term. The pre-tax figure for 2023-2024 is approx. $18,000.
  • The Education Award: Upon completion of a service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of $6,895. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, he or she does not make payments on his or her qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.   • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional healthcare while you serve with NDA.
  • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
