Job Description
Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is seeking Volunteer Teaching Assistants to engage elementary-aged girls and teach hands-on STEM activities in-person at public elementary schools in Oakland andRichmond, CA . If you have one afternoon a week and would like to give back to the community, we would love to hear from you.
You will work with a Head Teacher who leads the class. These positions are in-person and require you to be fully vaccinated for COVID. Check-out what our classes look like: SAfG in Action!
COMMITMENT:
- One day a week
- 3 - 4 hrs / week
- March - May 2023
- Core work hours will be approximately 2:45 - 5:30
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Head Teacher to deliver fun, engaging project-based STEM activities on site at elementary schools
- Consistently attend in-person classes on a weekly basis
- Promote the SAfG mission and scientist’s mindset in each class (6 C’s: Curious, Committed, Confident, Careful, Creative and Changemakers).
- Meet with the Head Teacher before class to help prep for class.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Interest in STEM
- Fully vaccinated for COVID.
- Experience with children in some capacity
- Consistently attend class on a weekly basis from March 1 - May 31 2023
- Commitment to educational equity and programming for girls
- Ability to maintain an excellent work ethic, a high level of energy and enthusiasm
- Valid driver's license and reliable car
- Need to pass clearances of negative TB Test and Live Scan (Department of Justice Background Check)

Scientific Adventures for Girl's mission is to remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM starting in transitional kindergarten, engage them through hands-on learning, increase their positive attitudes toward STEM, and equip them with 21st century skills.
Description
Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAFG), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, provides after school and summer STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs to young children with a special focus on girls and disadvantaged youth. SAFG's goals are to increase positive attitudes toward STEM in TK-6th grade female students and to increase hands-on learning opportunities for girls everywhere (including in economically marginalized areas) to explore STEM concepts and encourage lifelong learning of STEM subjects. If you are a female in a STEM field, you can meet with one of our classes, share your story about what you do and how you got interested in your field and do a fun project if you choose.
