The Organization:

The Donkeys of the Heart organization provides Equine Assisted Services with standard size donkeys:

  • Equine (Donkey) Assisted Learning, EAL.
  • Equine (Donkeys) Facilitated Psychotherapy, EFP.
  • EAL and EFP are therapeutic and educational opportunities to children and adults with cognitive, mental, and behavioral challenges. This includes the at-risk community and military populations.

Sophie Rainer, founder, and president is certified as Mental Health Equine Specialist and Learning (MHESL).Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl. PATH

Currently working on CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) certification to bring the highest standards of Equine Assisted Services in Adaptative Riding.

The Donkeys of the Heart is looking for leaders like you to join our Board of Directors. The volunteer board is the strategic heart of our organization, ensuring that in our work we deliver real results, respond to changes in our community, and always deliver the highest ethical standards worthy of public support. We expect different candidates will bring a range of skills and experience from the attributes listed below.

Board Members will serve a minimum one (1) year term and assist The Donkeys of the Heart to achieve its vision. Terms are eligible for renewal to a maximum of three (3) consecutive terms. The Board meets monthly to govern and oversee the management of the Organization. All Board Members are expected to participate in Committee activities and attend Committee meetings as required.

The roles are unpaid voluntary positions. Reasonable expenses are paid.

General:

  • Energetic and entrepreneurial businesspeople, eager to put their enthusiasm for helping populations affected by mental health issues, who are not already overextended with other commitments,
  • An understanding of our community and a passion for our cause.
  • Previous board, leadership experience.
  • Disability awareness and knowledge.
  • Financial and/or business experience or expertise.
  • Fund development.
  • Build awareness of The Donkeys of the Heart in the community.
  • Mental Health professionals.
  • Ability to operate as part of a team.
  • Participate in decision making activities.
  • Be always curious to learn more about Equine Assisted Services as well as nonprofit governance.
  • Make a personal, charitable contribution to The donkeys of the Heart to the best of their ability.

We are looking for:

VP-Communications : Coordinates communication including informational packets, email announcements, and all social media: Website, LinkedIn, Facebook, accounts), advertises volunteer requests, performs functions of President in the absence of his/her ability to act.
VP-Fundraising : Coordinates all fundraising activities, requests community and corporate donations and sponsorships, sends thank you notes for all contributions.
VP-Social : Coordinates the social activities, ensures space availability, plans for activities within the event, coordinates event volunteers, contacts community groups who may wish to participate, selects food/beverages. Works with VP Communications to print and distribute flyers.
Treasurer : Organizes, documents, and records all financial activities of the organization. Has oversight of all the funds in accordance with the organization's financial policies, collects/disperses funds, ensures funds are received and spent in accordance with the organization's tax-exempt purpose, bylaws, and budget, presents monthly financial statements (accounting background preferred).

What we do:

Equine Assisted Services With Donkeys

All sessions are conducted by Sophie Rainer certified by Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) as Equine Specialist Mental Health and Learning (ESMHL). We use ground-based activities to focus on emotional and mental health. A Mental Health Professional is on site for Equine (Donkey) Facilitated / Assisted Psychotherapy.

We help children, and adults, including the at-risk community, and military populations.

Equine (Donkey) Assisted Learning EAL

  • EAL is an experiential approach using donkeys as co-facilitators.
  • EAL provides opportunities to learn a variety of life skills and to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.


Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) - Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP)

  • The team includes a licensed therapist, and an ESMHL (Equine Specialist Mental Health and Learning).
  • It promotes personal exploration and behaviors.
