ORGANIZATION: StarkFresh

What’s this position all about?

StarkFresh is a nonprofit team of staff and volunteers working together to tackle the root causes of hunger by providing affordable retail food options and entrepreneurship training to the underserved within our community. Our mission is tackling the causes of hunger by creating realistic pathways out of poverty in Stark County. We do this through our neighborhood Grocery Stores, Mobile Grocery Market and Urban Training Farm. At our Food Justice Campus we have a Food Incubation Center where we take physical assets like the County’s only shared-use commercial kitchen available to rent on an hourly basis and pair it with plain-language business development, food safety and other trainings to reduce or remove barriers for people to be able to take a step forward. For a better understanding of who we are and what we do visit our website here.

This AmeriCorp Vista position is a one-year position in which you receive a bi-weekly living allowance from the Federal Government via direct deposit in the amount of $675.08 pre-tax. At the end of your one- year period of service, you are given either a cash award of $1,800 or an education stipend of $6,345. Additionally, while serving as an AmeriCorp Vista, any student loans that you may have can be deferred. In some cases, there are additional Health, Child and Housing Supports offered as well through AmeriCorp.

We’re seeking someone to help us with the coordination of our Urban Training Farm, whose goal is to provide fresh, organically-grown produce for sale through our retail food outlets and serve as re-entry employment opportunities for several marginalized collaborative partners. The coordination will be to grow, tend and harvest crops year-round and procure and manage the volunteer workforce to do that work.

What sort of qualifications are you looking for?

First and foremost, a love for helping others. Our mission is expressed every time someone interacts with us whether that’s shopping at our store, reading a newsletter, or interacting with us online and the right person understands that. Secondly, someone with growing/gardening skills, for obvious reasons. Not only will there be a lot of growing required in this role, but there will be a need to share that knowledge with others. This is ideally a 20-30+ hour a week, full-time position. It is an outside position that is very much in the weather elements and knowing this we are flexible in the hours that are worked, understanding that productivity isn’t necessarily tied to standard office hours, which are 9am-4pm during those days. We are very understanding when it comes to schedules and are used to accommodating non-traditional work needs if that is what you require. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

This all sounds great! How do I apply?

Interested candidates must apply for the position on the AmeriCorp website https://my.americorps.gov/mp/listing/viewListing.do?fromSearch=true&id=116634

Please note. The AmeriCorp Vista website is notoriously difficult to navigate. It typically will not work if attempting to use with a phone. Not only do you have to create an AmeriCorp login if you don’t already have one, but you must also apply to the specific job listing link above. We wish it were easier, but it is the Federal Government’s system, not ours.

We currently have four core programs that we deliver to our community that address these initial challenges that we had identified all those years ago.

Mobile Grocery Market

Our Mobile Grocery Market, otherwise known as the "Veggie Mobile" is our answer to bringing a variety of produce and fresh foods to individuals with mobility challenges throughout our community.

Urban Farming Sites

Nothing tastes better than homegrown produce. Our farm sites serve as a visual, hands-on ways for residents to learn how to start seeds, grow produce and gain valuable, transferable job skills.
