caring hands

To become a hospice volunteer at Sutter Care at Home the greatest gift one can offer is time, a caring nature, and a willingness to be present. Training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers, so previous experience in hospice is not required. Volunteers are trained to enhance the overall goal of meeting the emotional, social, and practical needs of hospice patients and their families.

It's a great opportunity to serve while learning new skills and enhancing existing ones. Volunteers may stay with the patient to give the caregiver some time away or time to rest and they can be caring companions and compassionate listeners to both patients and families. While volunteers cannot provide clinical or personal care, they may be able to assist with routine tasks and errands.

Our requirements:

Volunteers receive 24 hours of training, health clearance and a background check through Sutter Health.

Our volunteers are required to receive or show verification of an annual flu shot and Tuberculin skin test or blood test, provide immunization records or titers showing immunity to MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) and Varicella, show proof of TDAP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) and COVID-19 vaccinations, complete a drug screen and a health screening, consent to a criminal background check, and submit a copy of current driver’s license and auto insurance. Sutter will provide health screening and any necessary tests or vaccinations.

A minimum of 1-4 hours of volunteering per week and a 1-2 year commitment is required.
