Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking applicants to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at Boys Hope Girls Hope in New York City from September 2023-July 2024.

Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGHNY):

Boys Hope Girls Hope of NY is a non-profit, college preparatory urban boarding program that is committed to helping academically capable and motivated students reach their potential by providing them with a stable living environment, academic enrichment and support services to ensure their success through high school and beyond. BHGHNY scholars are motivated young men and women who are demonstrated leaders, and exhibit a genuine desire to succeed both in and out of the classroom. We partner with Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School located in Fort Green, Brooklyn and Cristo Rey Brooklyn High School located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

The Role:

Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York (BHGHNY) is seeking (2) Program Assistants to support our academy programming. These individuals will be passionate about supporting youth development and committed to closing the opportunity gap for historically underrepresented youth. Reporting to an on-site Director, the Program Assistant’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

ACADEMY PROGRAMMING SUPPORT:

  • Assist with weekly facilitation of workshops in the following areas: college access, academic success, life skills, and wellness
  • Advises cohort of students in subjects related to homework completion, academic skill-building, college preparation, career readiness, and life skills
  • Provides individual assistance and tutoring to scholars as needed
  • Support key departmental signature programs such as Community Days, Potlucks, Holiday Party, Decision Day, Dean’s List Celebration, and more
  • Assist with our Community Workshops on monthly themes including but not limited to: Hispanic Heritage Month, Indigenous People’s Day, Breast Cancer Awareness & more
  • Partners with staff to develop co-curricular events and services for scholars
  • Organizes and participates in community social gatherings, outings, and/or community service projects

SCHOLAR ADVISING:

  • Meets 4-6 hours a month with students individually or as a group
  • Co-leads bi-weekly group advisory sessions
  • Facilitates workshops related to group cohesion to foster positive relationships within our community
  • Maintains open communication with residential staff regarding student performance and scholar’s wellness

ADMINISTRATIVE & DAY TO DAY FUNCTION:

  • Helps administrative office with phones, filing, data entry
  • Provides oversight of daily programming such Structured Study Hall, Workshop Wednesdays, Dinnertime
  • Supports scholar check-in process

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience working with or for high school students in an urban setting
  • Self-starter who takes initiative and works well in a fast-paced environment both independently and collaboratively
  • Some college experience is preferred
  • U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident


AmeriCorps Member Benefits:

  • Housing for 2 members is provided by the site 
  • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance which is distributed bi-weekly over the 11 months term. The pre-tax figure for 2023-2024 is approx. $18,000.
  • The Education Award: Upon completion of a service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of $6,895. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, he or she does not make payments on his or her qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.   • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional healthcare while you serve with NDA.
  • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
