About WELCOME TABLE INC

Location:

1941 WEBBERVILLE RD, AUSTIN, TX 78721, US

Mission Statement

Welcome Table builds communities that increase access to education and wellness for children, families and elderly neighbors in our east Austin community. In partnership with local schools and other nonprofit organizations we offer programs and resources intended to bring people together for learning, inspiration, sustenance and friendship. We practice hospitality and wholeness as we seek to create spaces where everyone feels welcome, where their gifts are celebrated and nurtured, and their needs are met.

Description

Welcome Table and partner Proyecto Santiago are focused on issues in the Hispanic, African-American, and minority neighborhoods in East Austin. Its outreach effort includes:

  1. Providing student and teacher assistance at Norman-Sims Elementary to improve student perfromance and create community around the school (includes reading with students, music for kids, mentoring, teacher appreciation events, and other projects)
  2. Organizing direct services for the community, including the Neighbor 2 Neighbor food pantry and community center, which s hares food, diapers, utility assistance, and caring community with our low-income neighbors in East Austin, with a special focus on our senior neighbors. In the last two years alone, we have generated 8,000+ of volunteer hours and shared over 320,000 pounds of food and more than 150,000 diapers with our neighbors.
  3. Discussing and presenting organizational skills to address community problems (such as coordinating and leading a presentation to the school board, city council, or appropriate agency). Leadership for such occasions is on part of, and by, community members. The emphasis is on community empowerment.
