Ideal Internship for Majors including and similar to: Zoology, Biology, Animal Science, Ecology, Wildlife Management, Environmental Technology, Natural Resources, Vet Technology, Pre-Vet, and more!

This is an UNPAID internship. It is eligible for school credit depending on individual school program requirements.
Wildlife Care Association (WCA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer organization, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife.
The Animal Caretaker Internship provides hands-on experience in the WCA Bird Nursery and Triage Clinic working with injured and orphaned wildlife. Interns learn basic animal caretaking procedures, medical protocols, and in-depth species identification and natural histories. Interns will work alongside staff and other volunteers/interns to complete all tasks associated with animal rehabilitation. The majority of WCA’s in-center animal care consists of avian species, though all local wildlife species are accepted and treated. Interns will primarily work in the center helping with cage cleaning, animal feeding, medication distribution and other daily tasks. Some duties, however, may include animal transportations, assisting on phone lines, or special projects as needs arise. Educating the public is a large part of this position and interns will learn how to proceed when faced with public inquires. Interns are expected to work at least 16 hours per week during each session for a total minimum commitment of 200 hours. At least one weekend shift is required. Interns will also attend or complete 3 or more educational classes or trainings, provided by WCA, during their internship session. These trainings will count toward the 200-hour requirement. Most internships are 3-month sessions, but dates and timeframes are flexible. About Wildlife Care Association

Location:

5211 Patrol Road, McClellan, CA 95652, US

Mission Statement

Wildlife Care Association, Inc. is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of local wildlife. WCA is committed to educating and instructing the community in the respect, appreciation, and care of local wildlife. WCA is pledged to the management and preservation of wildlife habitat.

Description

Wildlife Care Association is a non-profit organization based out of McClellan, California (Sacramento area) that is permitted by the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to care for wildlife. WCA is open year round, seven days a week including most holidays.

Concerned citizens and local agencies bring us thousands of sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals each year. WCA provides emergency and on going medical services to the animals in our care with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. The staff at Wildlife Care Association relies on volunteers to accomplish this. WCA provides training for all volunteer positions. Volunteers are encouraged to expand their knowledge by attending training opportunities and classes.

WCA also provides many educational opportunities to the local Sacramento community. WCA offers live animal presentations to youth groups and other organizations to educate our community about local wildlife.

WCA is always looking for new volunteers to join our ranks. Our greatest need for volunteers comes during the spring and summer months when many local animals are breeding. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit our website at www.wildlifecareassociation.com and complete a volunteer application found under the "Help WCA" tab at the top of the page.
