Mission Statement
We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. An independent study showed 97% of Girls on the Run participants learned critical life skills including resolving conflict, helping others and intentional decision-making. Girls on the Run is the only national physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls with compelling evidence of program impact.
Description
At Girls on the Run we inspire ALL girls to build confidence and make intentional decisions, while fostering care and compassion for self and others. Girls on the Run of the Greater Piedmont started in the spring of 2008 with just 4 teams of 48 girls and 8 volunteer coaches from Iredell County. Today we serve Forsyth, Iredell and Rowan Counties and support 60 teams and approximately 900 girls annually thanks to the support of 225 volunteer coaches. Due to the generosity of our sponsors and donors we are able to provide financial assistance to 40% of our girls who otherwise would not have been able to participate. The program fosters an inclusive environment and offers the opportunity for all girls to participate, regardless of financial limitations through financial assistance. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which included dynamic discussions, activities and running programs. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k event. Working to build and encourage emotional, social, mental, and physical development, the girls continue to learn confidence, character, caring, connections, competence, and contribution.
