Our "friend at home" is an 86 years old veteran who lives in Jamaica Queens near the 169 th Street stop. He is originally from Puerto Rico and has lived in New York since the 1950s. He loves talking about sports, especially basketball, football, and baseball. He also enjoys playing pool at the senior center. He's friendly and talkative, and would like a Friendly Visitor who can visit in person any afternoon of the week. Queens Community House’s Friendly Visiting Program seeks volunteers to provide thoughtful and engaging weekly phone calls to isolated older adults with range of interests, hobbies, religious and political beliefs. Visits can be either in person or via phone.

To become a friendly visitor, you will have to complete an application and some other paperwork, provide two personal/professional references, consent to a background check, interview and then complete a 90-minute training. The process can take two to four weeks. There is short weekly reporting about your visits or phone calls and phone check-ins with the staff every three months. We ask that you commit to at least six months once the right match is found for you.
