  • 9 people are interested
Image_202004301227

We have been a non-profit for 8+ years, and received 501(c)(3) status in February of 2020. We are an all-volunteer organization, connecting outside volunteers with incarcerated people who need friendship, support, and mentoring, and are developing additional programs for restorative justice and professional mentoring.

Our strengths:

  • Great infrastructure
  • Professional website
  • Passionate volunteers
  • Proven history of commitment
We are in contact with 14,000+ prisoners all over the United States. Without funding, we have matched up 2,500 of them with friends on the outside. Everything we do comes out of our own pockets, and we could do so much more if we had funding.

Funding needs:
  • Annual volunteer event (August 2023)
  • Operational costs
  • Office space
  • Workshops & Training
We need someone with experience to join our team. If you are interested in social justice issues and ending mass incarceration, and have experience with donor outreach and/or grant writing, we need you!

About ADOPT AN INMATE

Location:

PO Box 1543, VENETA, OR 97487, US

Mission Statement

Adopt an Inmate invites society to treat people in prison as valuable members. Each time an inmate is 'adopted,’ their voice is amplified, their family grows, and one connection at a time, we are made aware of how the criminal justice system treats the people it presumes to judge. Adopt an Inmate provides education for both the incarcerated and their adopters, increasing the likelihood that the incarcerated will be prepared to enter the community and will be successful once they arrive.

Description

We are an all-volunteer organization that matches up outside volunteers with people on the inside who are looking for mentorship and support. We do not charge inmates or their families for our services. To date we have gotten over 2,000 prisoners adopted. We also partner with university professors and students on collaborative projects involving data we have collected directly from prisoners in our database. (Volunteering does not require direct communication with prisoners). Students of criminal justice, sociology, political science, counseling, psychology, etc., will find this work especially educational and rewarding. As a non-profit, we can provide community service hours.
