Do you enjoy working with kids? Telling stories and learning history? Being active outside? We might be the perfect fit for you!

Shawnee Town 1929 Museum needs help with leading Field Trip groups during their visit to our 1920s town and farm spaces! Our museum is a mix of historic buildings and artifacts with replicas, where we can take kids back 100 years and have them explore the life and lessons of the historical town. Volunteers work with each visiting class to explore the spaces, do hands-on activities, and connect them to the stories.

Our volunteers are given training in the history and how to work with visiting groups, no previous experience needed! You just need to enjoy talking with new people, can handle working with kids, and are willing to learn. You also need to be comfortable wearing 1920s reproduction costumes, which are sewn new and assigned to each volunteer to take home.

During the summer, volunteers also participate in our Time Travelers summer series, which is a living history program that features volunteers and staff in the various town businesses and farmstead areas, doing activities and telling stories of the history. These programs have adults, senior, teenagers, and young kids all visiting and eager to ask questions and be active.

Field trips are on Tuesday-Friday mornings in late March-May and a few also in September-October, Time Travelers summer living history programs 10:00am-2:00pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays Mid-June to Mid-August. Volunteers can make their own schedule! Sign up for the dates you'd like to participate, as often as you'd like. There are other special event opportunities we'll also share during the year if you'd like to sign up. All historical clothing and materials are provided. Exclusive programs, volunteer lunches, and training is also included.

Please contact Volunteer Coordinator Julie Bishop at jbishop@cityofshawnee.org or call (913) 248-2360 to find out more about this opportunity!
