Join us at Tilted Tavern to do some cleaning for and socializing with our beloved rescues!
Tasks may involve but are not limited to the following:
- Removing and replacing old bedding (pine shavings and straw)
- Cleaning plastic and rubber water and food dishes of various sizes
- Picking up feces in enclosures that house goats, pigs, and birds
- Giving hay to goats, cows, or horses
- Repairing fencing
- Removing old fencing
- Organizing the barn, shed, and other facilities
- Refilling food bins
- Brushing, belly rubs, and giving healthy snacks to our more social residents (goats, pigs, chickens, ducks, horses, and cows)
- All of our residents are individuals and vary on how social they are in general or may be on any particular day or moment just like us ;)
- Certain animals will be off limits when it comes to making direct contact inside their enclosure due to potential liability issues and for their well-being and safety
We do not have the following currently:
- Restrooms
- Electricity (AC or heat)
- Inside facilities (except for our barn and food shed)
But we do have these:
- Water bottles
- Disinfectant
- Hand warmers if needed
- Friendly goats
- Lots of appreciation for your time
- Pigs with a LOT of personality
- Fun supervisors (self-described)
- Very, very chatty geese
If can be incredibly muddy during the winter, fall, and actually throughout the entire year. So we recommend wearing rain or work boots if you have them. Definitely wear shoes, pants, and a top(s) that you don't mind getting dirty, covered in hay, or possibly damaged. We recommend wearing pants over shorts.
Some of the work does involve lifting heavy items up to 50 pounds. But if you are unable, please know there are plenty of other tasks that do not require heavy lifting. If there is a severe weather warning or thunderstorms, we will reschedule. But otherwise, we may work when it is quite warm, cold, or while it is raining (depending on severity).

To rescue and provide comprehensive care, security, and love for farm animals that have been abused, neglected, or forgotten, with the hope that their stories will inspire and motivate toward a greater understanding and respect for every individual life.
Description
Tilted Tavern Animal Sanctuary was created in 2018 as a much needed safe haven for abused and neglected farm animals in northeast Tennessee. Within a short time, TTAS had become a forever home for over 80 animals. We have Dumbleboar that was abused via a dog fighting ring, Twizzlers the goat who was tied to the same spot for close to two years without a single hoof trim leading to her walking on her knees, hens that were abused (broken toes and starved), and so many more with stories to tell.
We need volunteers to prep and feed part of the daily ration, clean enclosures, assist with various building or clerical projects, and that simply spend time with our rescues. We have morning and afternoon shifts currently available. Feeding and cleaning shifts usually last an hour while projects and social time can last one to a few hours. Volunteers commit to one shift a week for feeding, cleaning, and socializing. Projects are once a month or scheduled as needed throughout the year. Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
