Recruiting Organization: The Works Art & Design Festival

Volunteer photographers play an integral role in The Works Art & Design Festival, using their skilled eyes to capture special moments and memories we can share with the world. As a volunteer photographer you document North America’s largest free outdoor art and design festival.

The Works Art & Design Festival is the most unique, free event of its kind. It attracts artists, designers and patrons from around the world - boosting the city’s energy and imagination at the start of each summer. The 2023 Festival dates are July 7th-July 16.

Volunteer photographers must bring their own DSLR camera and attend The Works free photography orientation. Photographers experienced with crowd photography are encouraged to apply, though this is not necessary. Volunteers interested in this position must also submit a resume of their photography experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Roam the festival grounds and capture the magic that is The Works festival.
  • Attend The Works free photography orientation.
  • Solicit consent forms when taking recognizable photos of individuals.
  • Use of personal DSLR camera is a requirement.
  • Managing data: labeling, sorting and transferring files to The Works staff or computers.
  • Follow a shot list to take photos requested by the marketing department and photography team lead.
  • Properly crediting artwork that appears in photographs.

Skills and Assets Required:

  • The ability to remain outside for an entire shift in all (safe) weather conditions is required.
  • Comfort approaching patrons to ask for consent form to be signed is required.
  • Comfort roaming the festival grounds on your own is required.
  • Detail orientated
  • Experience photographing crowds or groups of people is an asset.

Time Required:

  • Attendance to a 1.5-hour in-person orientation is mandatory, however there will be multiple held to allow for differing schedules. Accommodation can also be arranged.
  • A photography orientation/training session is mandatory to be a Works photographer, in addition to the general orientation. There can be multiple held to allow for differing schedules, depending on interest.
  • Photography shifts are typically 2 to 3 hours in length, which includes a 30-minute break, however this position is flexible, and accommodation can be made.
