In July 2023, 250 youth poets and spoken word artists will be competing in San Francisco for the title of Grand Slam Champions at the Annual Brave New Voices International Festival.
Judges are one of our most critical roles in the slam; they help determine which poets will move onto bigger stages to be heard by bigger audiences. Judges should think of themselves as encouragers of the 13-19-year-old writers. Please note that prior experience is not necessary for judging; we will provide you useful framework and guidelines to help this role become a great experience for you.
No poetry experience is necessary, just enthusiasm!
Judges (5) are needed for each round (or bout) will receive a brief training on how Youth Speaks approaches judging a Poetry Slam. The Slam host will walk you through how to judge and how to use our scorecards and will answer any questions you might have.
