Best Buddies Citizens program works to build one-to-one friendships between people with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), offering social mentoring while improving the quality of life and level of inclusion for a population that is often isolated and excluded. Through their participation, people with IDD form meaningful connections with their peers, gain self-confidence and self-esteem, and share interests, experiences and activities that many other individuals enjoy. By matching participants with and without IDD in friendships and hosting engaging community events, the Best Buddies Citizens program strives to create an inclusive and diverse community for all.
We ask all volunteers participating in our program (with and without IDD) to complete an application if interested at www.bestbuddies.org/join. After completing an application, we ask all participants to complete a free background check that we will send to you, attend a very brief virtual orientation (45 mins max!), commit to a one-year friendship where there will be communication once a week and time spent together at least once or twice a month.
If you do not want to be in a 1:1 match, we host various group events throughout the year that you can participate in solo, and still get to spend time with our Best Buddies community!
Currently, our programs are most active in the Boston, MA, Worcester, MA and Providence, RI areas.

Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Our programs empower the special abilities of people with IDD by helping them form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.
