Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, AmeriCorps (NDMVA) is seeking applicants to serve as a Full-time AmeriCorps Member at Gateway U in Newark, NJ from September 2023-July 2024.

Gateway U is New Jersey’s first-ever hybrid degree pathway site, bringing an innovative new model to Newark that has already helped double graduation rates and eliminate the black-white college completion gap in Boston, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

As a College Success Coach at Gateway U, you will have the chance to be a part of a small, innovative, and entrepreneurial team that is hyper-focused on guiding students through a unique online college process so that they can obtain a degree and achieve their dreams. The primary functions of the role include supporting the direct coaching, recruiting, and enrolling of students, in addition to participating in community development efforts. College Success Coaches will be responsible for working with a wide range of students providing them with the personalized, 1:1 support they need to complete their college degree as quickly and affordably as possible.

The ideal candidate for this role is passionate about the power of education to break down barriers to opportunity. This person has strong relationship-building skills, is a problem-solver, is seeking a community-rooted organization, and is excited about the opportunity to work directly with students on their journey to obtain a college degree. They will be energized by the opportunity to innovate and be a part of a new, growing, and impactful endeavor.

Eligibility, Required Experience, and Skills:

  • At least 2 years of college experience and U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
  • Interest in the power of education to break down barriers to economic opportunity
  • Flexibility, a willingness to learn, and strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

NDMVA Member Responsibilities:

Student Coaching (45%)

  • Build strong relationships with each student you work with to support them in their academic progress and goals (this often involves reviewing an academic project to ensure clarity before they start, reviewing work that needs to be revised and resubmitted to offer suggestions and guidance)
  • Collaborate with Saymah Nah and Karen DeNose (Gateway U’s Senior Manager of Student Success) to ensure all students are making adequate daily and weekly progress towards Associate or Bachelor’s degree completion by reviewing aggregate daily/weekly data on student progress

Student Recruitment & Enrollment (45%)

  • Support tasks related to student enrollment including, but not limited to: checking daily financial aid report to update student status, outreach to students about necessary next steps in the financial aid and application process, helping students obtain necessary documents for FAFSA, tracking application status/updates, updating/auditing student records in our database
  • Outreach to prospective and current students to schedule next steps including information sessions, financial aid and enrollment meetings, and orientation meetings and tracking these contacts until a student is successful in attending

Community Events & Other (10%)

  1. Partner with Karen and Saymah to brainstorm and help execute community-focused events to help promote the brand of and community engagement with Gateway U
  2. Support Karen and the rest of the Gateway U team in thinking through best practices continually improve Gateway U’s coaching and enrollment practices
  3. Ensure students have the proper wrap-around supports to successfully complete their degree such as: access to technology, childcare, transportation and other needs as they arise

AmeriCorps Member Benefits:

  • Living Allowance: Because Notre Dame- AmeriCorps is partnered with the Corporation for National and Community Service, we are able to offer our members a yearly living allowance which is distributed bi-weekly over the 11 months term. The pre-tax figure for 2023-2024 is approx. $18,000.
  • The Education Award: Upon completion of a service term, AmeriCorps members receive a taxable education award of $6,895. The education award can be applied to qualified student loans or future education.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: Members of NDA are eligible for forbearance of federal student loans during their term of service. This means that while a member is serving, he or she does not make payments on his or her qualifying loans. In addition, the National Trust will pay the interest that accrues on the loan at the end of the term of service.   • Optional Health Insurance: We provide optional healthcare while you serve with NDA.
  • Child Care: NDA members may also be eligible for child care benefits. The AmeriCorps Child Care Program covers up to the state’s local market rate for child care fees and makes payments directly to the member’s caregiver.
