The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is looking for highly motivated volunteers with a passion for trails and their National Parks to join our Volunteer Trail Crew to assist park staff in the maintenance and upkeep of the 12-mile Incline 6 to 10 Trail that follows the historic inclined planes and levels of the Portage Railroad along the eastern front of the Allegheny Mountains, and the 2-mile Staple Bend Tunnel Trail that follows the trace of the old Portage Railroad Level #2 near Mineral Point. Trail Crew Members will work with park staff in various capacities including clearing woody vegetation and debris from along trails, clearing out ditches to keep runoff from rutting the trails, removing trash along trails and parking areas, maintaining the trail corridor by cutting back vegetation during the growing season, installation of mile markers along the Incline 6 to 10 Trail, and removal of invasive plants and shrubs. Workdays will be planned throughout the spring, summer, and fall from March through November and will consist of weekday and weekend schedules. Volunteer do not need to attend every workday, but we ask that they commit to attend at least 4 days throughout the season.
Tools such as loppers, axes, rakes, saws, shovels, and string trimmers, maybe be used. The work may require some heavy lifting, physical work, and hiking up to 1-2 miles in a workday. A strong work ethic and ability to work as a member of a diverse team is necessary. Tool and safety training will be provided.
All tools and personal protection equipment needed by the volunteer, will be supplied by the park for their use during the workdays. Safety and safe work practices are of the highest priority and must be followed by all team members at all times during the workday.
