El Cajon Library - Volunteer Position Description

Overview and Impact: El Cajon Library patrons check out 30-40 thousand items per month. Library Page volunteers help put away returned items, and also retrieve materials that patrons want sent to a library branch of their choice. Chosen candidates will be detail-oriented and have an appreciation for neatness and methodology. Enjoy Learning about how the library works while helping the library fulfill one of its most important functions, getting materials into the hands of our patrons.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sign up for at least one 2-hour shift per week.
  • Shelve and retrieve library materials while concurrently merchandizing.
  • Put away items in the appropriate places.
  • Communicate closely with Library Technicians.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform all tasks listed above under Key Responsibilities.
  • Capable of putting numbers and letters in chronological order.
  • Strong communication skills in English and command of the English alphabet.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending and twisting of neck and waist, squatting, simple grasping, and reaching above and below shoulder level.
  • Background check required.
  • At least 18 years of age.

Training and Support Provided: Orientation and training on library materials and procedures prior to first shift. Staff available for consultation at all times.

Time Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week for at least 6 months.
