Can You Have a Good Phone Conversation while Avoiding Politics?

Queens Community House’s Friendly Visiting Program seeks volunteers to provide thoughtful and engaging weekly phone calls to isolated older adults with range of interests, hobbies, religious and political beliefs. Visits can be either in person or via phone.

We have a client who is 79 years old and is a retired teacher. She loves folk music from the 60's. She does not enjoy talking about politics, but enjoys talking about the news and history. She'd prefer phone calls on Saturdays.

To become a friendly visitor, you will have to complete an application and some other paperwork, provide two personal/professional references, consent to a background check, interview and then complete a 90-minute training. The process can take two to four weeks. There is short weekly reporting about your visits or phone calls and phone check-ins with the staff every three months. We ask that you commit to at least six months once the right match is found for you.
