Queens Community House’s Friendly Visiting Program seeks volunteers to provide thoughtful and engaging weekly phone calls to isolated older adults with range of interests, hobbies, religious and political beliefs. Visits can be either in person or via phone.
This client loves sharing languages. She is 76 years old and lives in Rego Park. She speaks English, Spanish, Hebrew, French and Italian. She is also learning Russian. She enjoys playing Mahjong, Chess, and cards. She studied global relations in college and is very well traveled. She was also an English teacher and school principal for many years. She'd like to be matched with a volunteer who can visit her in person on either Wednesdays or Saturday evenings around 7:30 pm. Some activities that she'd like to do with a volunteer include playing games, doing arts and crafts, watching tv shows and movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime. She'd also appreciate someone who will watch Fox News with her.
To become a friendly visitor, you will have to complete an application and some other paperwork, provide two personal/professional references, consent to a background check, interview and then complete a 90-minute training. The process can take two to four weeks. There is short weekly reporting about your visits or phone calls and phone check-ins with the staff every three months. We ask that you commit to at least six months once the right match is found for you.
