QUICK OVERVIEW
Join us in supporting low-income, first-generation college students! Operation Jump Start exists to help students get in, stay in, and graduate from college.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
We'd love to have you as a mentor for our bright and inspiring youth. You will provide guidance, support, and fun outings to a young student. You have the potential to develop a lifelong connection and friendship - and this happened in our program many, many times!
IMPACT
We believe college education is one of the surest ways to break the cycle of poverty. By providing long-term services and resources that support the WHOLE student, we are creating an environment where students can triumph over their circumstances, succeed in school, and thrive in their lives. We provide scholarships, mentoring, counseling, academic support, tutoring, fun events and trips, and opportunities for leadership.
VOLUNTEER ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The mentor serves as a role model and friend to support students in reaching their full potential. This includes one-on-one time getting to know and building trust with your mentee; planning and attending enriching outings to enjoy together; and offering support as the student navigates their college planning. Many of our mentors/mentees forge truly meaningful bonds, maintaining their relationship long after the formal mentorship program ends!
Our mentors tell us that this is a rewarding and life-changing experience. This is a heartwarming opportunity for adults who wish to give back to our youth.
REQUIREMENTS
At least 24 years old (some flexibility on this, so still reach out if you are younger!)
Available to spend 6 hours a month with your mentee
Have a college degree (preferably), or currently working on one
Commit to 1-3 years with us
Provide transportation with your own vehicle to your mentee throughout Long Beach
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
YOU DO NOT NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE in mentoring, teaching, tutoring, or working with youth. All you need is excitement and dedication to learn!
This opportunity completely works around your schedule. As long as you are committed to being there for your student and have a handful of hours to spare each month, this is for you. No rigid schedules!

Mission Statement
Our mission is to help under-resourced, first-generation college students get in, stay in, and graduate from college. We do this by providing academic support, mentoring, and exposure to a broader world.
Description
OJS's mentorship program serves our 8th-10th grade LBUSD students. Volunteer mentors from the community are paired with a student and commit to building a 1-on-1 relationship with that student for a formal commitment of 1-3 years -- although many of our mentor/mentees forge truly meaningful bonds, maintaining their relationship long after the official OJS program ends! Volunteers must be 24 years of age or older, must be able to provide transportation in their own vehicle, and must have a college degree.
