Youth Advocate Volunteer Description

Haven Adolescent Community Respite Center ("Haven") provides vital, family-strengthening,
community-based services for adolescents and their families experiencing family conflict, significantly
reducing the risks of teen homelessness and incarceration.

Youth Advocates serve as residential staff at our respite center located on the west side of Jersey City.
The center houses up to 4 youths ages 12 - 17 who are experiencing conflict at home, runaway and/or
homeless for up to 3 weeks.

Because of the nature of our work, we are unable to predict when we will be housing youths, therefore the urgency for volunteers to support us overnights and/or on the weekends is crucial and important. Mission Statement

Haven Adolescent Community Respite Center ("Haven") provides vital, family-strengthening, community-based services for adolescents and their families experiencing family conflict, significantly reducing the risks of teen homelessness and incarceration.

Description

HAVEN ADOLESCENT COMMUNITY RESPITE CENTER IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT ADOLESCENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES DURING TIMES OF DOMESTIC CONFLICT.

We provide counseling, positive opportunities for youth development, and peer support for adolescents and their families without stigma and without assigning blame in an effort to keep youth at home when possible and safe. We provide a short-term residential alternative to runaway and homeless youths, when necessary.

We as parents, community members, and youth service providers are thrilled to provide a new alternative for youth and their families when conflicts intensified by stress, poverty, racism, etc., get too intense. We hope we can divert young people from long term homelessness and criminal justice involvement and be contributors to a strong and vibrant community support structure for Hudson County families with teens. We aspire to build a strong relationship with Hudson County young people and their families which acknowledges and instrumentalizes the incredible community resources that already exist. Our peer support programs are collaborations with existing organizations for parents and teens.
