Habitat for Humanity partners with prospective homebuyers to provide a decent place to live through the construction of new and rehabilitated homes. Habitat homebuyers help build their own home alongside staff members and volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
Decent, affordable housing provides homeowners with a place to gather, grow and create the conditions that help alleviate instability, stress and fear. It also encourages self-reliance and confidence. Studies have found that strong, stable households are foundational to child development and growth, health and safety, financial savings, and educational opportunities. Surveys of Habitat homeowners and their families show better financial health, more confidence in meeting their family’s needs, and even improved grades for their children.
Volunteer activities can include anything it takes to build a home from start to finish. Typical volunteer activities include framing, siding, painting, roofing, laying flooring, hanging doors or windows, trim work, finishing, landscaping, and cleaning. We mean it when we say - every single task is critical for the success of our mission. We are currently building new construction homes in Hanover Park and rehabbing homes in Glen Ellyn and West Chicago.
Build Day Schedule
- 7:45 - 8:00 AM: Arrival
- 8:05 AM: Site orientation and mandatory safety talk
- 12:00 PM: Break for lunch (Please bring your own)
- 2:30 PM: Site cleanup and closing remarks
What to Wear/Bring
- Sturdy, closed-toed shoes
- Layers of clothes you can get dirty/paint on (jeans or shorts, t-shirt, jacket)
- Water is provided, and a refillable water bottle is recommended
