Junior Shark Tank Lead

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: S.Y.STEM Coalition

We are looking for a volunteer to lead the Pittsburgh Junior Shark Tank (JST) program planning and execution. Tasks would include recruiting students and mentors, facilitate media promotion, connect with schools, community organizations and businesses to make sure that JST continues to grow and impact the participants positively!

About the Program:

Junior Shark Tank is a program for high school students to learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), business, and entrepreneurship. Students form teams to develop a novel product with a business case. The program focuses on teaching students lessons from industry best practices and having them apply the lessons to their products. Students develop prototypes of their product, giving each team access to hands on development and a resource budget. Industry volunteers provide dedicated technical and business mentoring to each team and provide guest lectures on industry topics and career pathways. At the end of the program, each team showcases their product pitch, business plan, technical design, and their prototype to the "Sharks" on Competition Day. Winning teams, as selected by sharks, are recipients of scholarships sponsored by industry partners. Students leave the Junior Shark Tank program with more interest in STEM and business careers, and more confidence in related skillsets.

Mission Statement

Lead the coalition of industry and education to steer youth to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics through experience-based learning.

Description

A little about SYSTEM Coalition: we started 5 years ago in Tucson, AZ. Six exceptionally talented and motivated people who wanted to give back to the community by helping k-12 students find a passion for STEM. We saw all of the poverty in our city and realized if just one of those kids from that community was able to get a great paying job in STEM, they could not only help themselves but also help their whole family break the cycle of poverty! Now the organization has over 100 volunteers, chapters in 4 different cities and growing! More than anything, being a part of this amazing organization has shown me that you really CAN change the world, one step at a time!
