ETIV is offering a fantastic opportunity for volunteers or interns interested in Teaching English as a second language to the children and youth of Itacaré, Bahia, Brazil. One of the reasons why English is so important here is because tourism is the main economic driver in Itacaré. This means that students who receive English classes, will have a much greater chance of finding work in the vast tourist Industry here. Furthermore, a part of the exam that must be taken for students to be able to receive a scholarship for University here, is only offered in either English or Spanish - even though most low income students that are attending public schools here are not receiving quality English lessons, if any at all! Therefore, it is a valuable tool of empowerment that does change lives and helps promote social justice. To continue, there are also possibilities to offer English classes to adults here as well. Teachers receive support from the English Project Coordinator or an ETIV staff member (if a coordinator is not available). Although it is highly recommended that applicants have some background or/or experience with teaching English prior to applying for this position, others are welcome to apply.

The ETIV English Program focuses mainly on targeting low income children and youth who attend public schools and/or who would not otherwise have the opportunity to receive quality English classes. Most of our classes are not conducted in a local school, but instead we have classes running in a variety of public spaces including a local church, capoeira school and our own learning space next to the ETIV volunteer house.

Main Responsibilities:

• To support development of the curriculum while also preparing the lessons plans and documenting everything so that it can be re-used and built upon in the future.
• To take attendance and document outcomes including successes, challenges and best practices for every class.
• To teach many of the core values that lay the foundation for ETIV's work, also listed on our website.

Requirements:

• Volunteers must work at least 20 hours per week
• Basic Portuguese
• Experience teaching English
• Minimum 1 month time commitment

Most interns can receive university credit while interning with our NGO and some are even able to receive a University stipend or grant to help cover their expenses. We can offer ongoing support and supervision and can help organize taxi pickups, local accommodations and even Capoeira or Portuguese classes. All volunteers and interns will also receive our Pre-Departure Powerpoint, and Introduction to the NGO, a tour of Itacare and life insurance during their internship at the NGO.
