Position Summary

Director of Fundraising.The Director of Fundraising plans and executes fundraising events, solicits and stewards donors, and writes grants to create capital for and build the brand of Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control programs. The successful candidate has knowledge of and experience in nonprofit fundraising and development, both virtually and in-person. Responsibilities will include both stewarding existing donors and recruiting new donors, as well as putting together and running a successful fundraising committee. Job responsibilities will include making sure that FODACC has all proper permits and licenses to host our fundraisers, assisting the Treasurer with proper legal reporting of donations, and working within a budget to maximize profit from fundraisers while ensuring popular and well-attended events. The Director of Fundraising is a voting member on the board.

Position responsibilities:

• Build partnerships with local businesses and/or hosting sites for in-person events
• Communicate with board members and volunteers so events are adequately planned, marketed, prepared for, and staffed
• Advertise events in conjunction with the Social Media/PR team
• Plan new creative events as well as continue traditions of events that have done well in the past
• Prioritize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion when planning events by focusing on supporting black-owned businesses and/or locations in the city limits of Detroit
• Build and uphold a reputation for professionalism, fun, punctuality, and financial responsibility of our organization
• Create a fundraising calendar at least one year in advance
• Coordinate with other FoDACC committees as well as a possess awareness of other similar organizations operating in our area to ensure events are well-spaced and not duplicated
• Host at least one fundraiser each quarter (minimum of 4 in-person events per calendar year)
• Ensure our participation in nationally recognized events such as Giving Tuesday, Amazon Prime Day, Clear the Shelters, etc.
• Solicit in-kind donations for raffles, etc. as well as monetary donations/sponsorships for match donation drives, etc. and provide recognition to donors
• Work with Treasurer to track in-kind and monetary donations and provide accurate receipts/tax reporting
• Create and stick to a budget for collateral, décor, entertainment, food/drink, space rental, projected attendance, ticket sales, etc. to ensure an acceptable profit margin
• Host at least 6 donation drives per year (virtually and in-person) of specific items and/or money for specific asks
• Be able to react and redirect quickly for immediate or unexpected fundraising needs
• Understand our position and philosophies within the world of animal welfare and adhere to our principles when considering partnerships
• Make qualification calls/visits, cultivate, solicit, and provide recognition and steward appropriately major gifts with an emphasis of gifts of $1,000 or more

Required qualifications:

• Ability to set and work within a budget
• Excellent communication skills
• Intimate knowledge of Windows and G-Suite including Gmail, Sheets, Drive, Calendar apps
• Intimate knowledge of Facebook fundraising
• Willingness to cold call and forge new relationships
• Driven and hardworking
• Experience with event planning
• Experience with working within a team
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license with an acceptable driving record
• Ability to pass a background check
• Proven ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with a diverse client base
• Experience calling, conducting face-to-face appointments, managing relationships, creating and presenting proposals, and other fundamental elements of client/donor relationship activities

Preferred qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree
• Experience on a nonprofit board or working for a nonprofit as an employee
• Experience finding and writing grants
• Knowledge of nonprofit grants in animal welfare
• Portfolio of awarded grants
• Experience with major corporation donations
• Previous fundraising experience with an emphasis on building a portfolio of donors or clients and closing gifts
• Ability to prioritize and organize complex projects and plans to deliver results
• Ability to meet deadlines and follow through on projects
• Solid understanding of development techniques and systems based on past performance
• Passion and enthusiasm for Detroit, the mission of Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control, and animals

It is expected that this board position will be a commitment of 15 hours per week minimum with mandatory availability on nights and weekends. The Director of Fundraising will be expected to bring in $25,000 in their first year between grants, fundraisers, and donations. This position is unpaid and the Director of Fundraising will receive no compensation.

An example of previous successful fundraising events include: car wash, spaghetti dinner, golf outing, euchre tournament, formal dance, liquor basket raffle, bowling event, rummage sale, trivia night, bar/restaurant/yoga studio donating a percentage of sales, painting with a twist type event, comedy show, etc.

This is a non-paying position.

Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control exists to support Detroit Animal Care and Control in the areas of volunteer management, donation solicitation and acceptance, and live release, which includes shelter intervention.

Our goal is to create and train a team of volunteers who are knowledgeable of canine and feline body language, adept at handling animals in the most humane way, practice current scientifically based training methods, and who are advocates for this city, its citizens, and all animals.

Our goal is to supplement the budget allocated to the shelter by the city of Detroit in order to operate a fully functional shelter with innovative and lifesaving programs by applying for grants, holding fundraisers, forming relationships with and stewarding donors and foundations, and accepting all material and in-kind donations from our volunteers and supporters.

Our goal is to work with DACC to expand and perfect their adoption program, foster program, and transfer/transport program. We want to host off-site adoption events and get animals from Detroit adopted back into Detroit, as well as surrounding communities. We also want to work with partner shelters in other regions of the state and country to move dogs and cats from our overpopulated area to areas where there is not such an abundance of homeless animals. We also want to expand our shelter intervention services to stem the flow of animals into the shelter in the first place by keeping them in their homes or reuniting them quickly if they become displaced.

Our goal is to practice and promote science-based training methods that are not harmful to a dog’s mental or physical state and encourage and strengthen the bond between humans and animals.

Our goal is to promote education both inside and outside the organization and community that all dogs are individuals, that breed-specific legislation and policies don’t work, that no cat should be declawed, and that community cats should be cared for in line with progressive humane programs like trap-neuter-return.
