Volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups supporting teachers in the K12 program as they lead activities for kids ages 5-18 (majority 5-12) and provide general classroom support. During the school year, K12 programing focuses on assisting in schoolwork and socializing in a safe environment after school. Summertime programming in K12 focuses more on social and emotional learning than on academic learning unless specifically requested by parents, so volunteers will primarily be expected to casually play with/spend time with kids and keep them engaged in activities in the classroom. Effective K12 volunteers will be patient and comfortable in an unstructured classroom environment, proactive about engaging with kids and drawing them into activities (rather than staying on the sidelines/waiting for kids to come to them). Shifts are available Monday through Friday, 2pm-6pm, with opportunities for partial shifts. Volunteers are also required to complete a preliminary (15 min) interview and basic background check paid for by People Serving People. Prospective volunteers should contact volunteering@peopleservingpeople.org to get scheduled or learn more.

Mission Statement
People Serving People exists to see families thrive.
Description
People Serving People is the largest and most comprehensive emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness in Minnesota and a dedicated leader in homelessness prevention.
Our 99 hotel-style emergency shelter housing units for children and families experiencing homelessness include a bathroom, beds, basic furniture, and a door families can lock behind them to feel safe. Three nutritious meals are served daily in our cafeteria, and diapers and other basic necessities are provided free of charge. After immediate basic needs are met, families are provided access to comprehensive Engagement Services to move towards stability. Services include access to Advocates who work with families to address their barriers and access the resources they need, Education programming for children from infancy through age 18, and resources for adults including parent engagement and financial fitness classes and a technology resource center.
People Serving People also offers 10 apartment-style supportive housing units, the Family Prevention Program, which advances our goal of supporting housing stability outside of shelter, and the Center of Excellence Preschool and Learning Center, which offers childcare to families leaving shelter and in the surrounding Phillips neighborhood.
