Shadow Mountain Designated Dispersed Camping Ambassador

Save to Favorites

Shadow Mountain is an amazing place to camp on the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Just north of Jackson, Wyoming, and on the eastern border of Grand Teton National Park the area sees a lot of tourists camping and visiting the park. There are many incredible forest roads to travel, amazing vistas, mountain biking and world class wildlife viewing. Due to the large amount of people seeking dispersed camping opportunities so close to Grand Teton National Park, the Forest Service has created a designated camping system where vehicles are only allowed in specific, numbered sites.

A camping ambassador is someone who provides visitors with education, information and keeps an eye on overall conditions of the area. Typically, they perform patrols of the area on a UTV or a truck. During these patrols, they greet campers, ensure they are staying in a designated site and not out of bounds, and provide them with information on how to camp responsibly: proper food storage in bear country, respecting stay limits, remembering to put out fires, pack out trash and dispose of human waste properly. Other duties include improving signage, checking fire-rings for abandoned campfires and communicating area-specific needs and issues to a Forest Service supervisor.

Reimbursements are provided by Friends of the Bridger-Teton through a Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board grant.
