This stipend eligible position is for the 2023-2024 school year and includes a $3000 stipend ($1500 each term); half paid at mid-point of & remainder paid end of term. The Self Advocacy Intern collaborates with self-advocates, adults with disabilities and self-advocacy groups across the state. Focus of internship is to increase outreach, strengthen influence and deepen impact within the disability community and in the broader public.


Responsibilities:
  • Support planning & preparing for monthly meetings and social activities; meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 5:00 - 7:30pm and Thursdays 4:30pm - 5:30pm
  • Help create & share agendas & send meeting reminders to group members
  • Notify internal staff of their meeting assignment(s)
  • Share information about self-advocacy, Arc programs and how to get involved
  • Coordinate food orders for meetings if applicable
  • Answer and resolve accommodations requests
  • In partnership with self-advocates and self-advocacy groups across the state:
  • Support them around information, news, events, issues & taking action
  • Support, develop & determine resources helping them grow and enhance self-advocacy groups, leadership and The Arc Minnesota website
  • Support existing & grow new SA groups, civic engagement & other connection opportunities statewide
  • Modify documents as requested utilizing Plain Language
  • Assist with providing and implementing self-advocacy trainings
  • Help coordinate & take notes during planning meetings; set up Zoom conference call & reserve meeting space
  • Send meeting reminders with conference call information
  • Support training logistics; help secure event dates/times/locations
  • Write social media posts on meeting and training opportunities
  • Other duties as requested

Qualifications:
  • Must be available 2nd Tuesday of the month 4:30-8pm and/or Thursdays 4:30- 6pm
  • Must be willing to have a flexible work schedule & meet after business hours occasionally
  • Effective active listening, group facilitation & organization skills; accuracy a must
  • Research and analysis skills; can create materials to be utilized with diverse audiences
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable making phone calls, engaging in events/meetings and using/facilitating Zoom meeting
  • Will work with and have respect for people of all backgrounds; in teams and independently
  • Dependable and can keep information confidential
  • Effective time management and problem solving skills; proficient computer skills
  • Manages multiple priorities and follows a project through to completion
  • Commitment to social, racial, disability and LGBTQ+ justice and their intersections
  • Multiple language capabilities preferred but not required
  • Preference for individuals with a disability and/or lived experience around race and disability justice


Time Commitment:
  • 10-15 hours per week for the September 2023 - May 2024 time frame. Internship done remotely and/or in-person. Office hours are Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekends as schedule allows/if needed.
