Recruiting Organization: California Native Plant Society, Yerba Buena Chapter
The California Native Plant Society is a statewide non-profit organization of
amateur and professionals. Our goals are to increase the understanding of California’s native flora and preserve this rich natural heritage for future generations.
The Yerba Buena Chapter encompasses San Francisco and northern San Mateo
Counties and is named for the tiny fragrant mint Satureja douglasii, found in this area. The chapter has 12 or more volunteer led field trips each year where visitors are welcomed.
Recruit and seek to retain volunteer field trip leaders. Brainstorm ideas for new field trips.
Schedule field trips to avoid important events (ex: garden shows, native plant tours or
sales). Obtain a waiver for each field trip using an online system.
Document the field trip information for publication in the newsletter and on the website
and calendar and social media. Write a seasonal introductory paragraph (with
advice on what to do if rain is forecast) and arrange chronologically.
Coordinate with newsletter editor for online monthly email blast and as needed published
version. Proofread the field trips before publication.
Publicize field trips on Yerba Buena chapter website, on local calendar websites and
social media (ex: MeetUp).
Email field trip leaders a copy of the trip description, as published. Request that they 1)
track the hours they and co-leaders spend preparing for the trip as well as
leading it, 2) confirm waivers are provided for participants and 3) count the
number of participants. After each trip request trip leader(s) report the above
information (no more than one reminder to each leader or co-leader).
Keep track of hours spent coordinating field trips.
Provide a short monthly report for the board on field trips and an annual summary of completed
field trip information on a spreadsheet. Provide an itemized list for use in
the annual Chapter Activities Report.
