Why Volunteer?

The ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization dedicated to fighting Lou Gehrig's Disease on every front. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter’s mission is to discover treatments and a cure for ALS and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.  On average, people with ALS live only two to five years from the time of diagnosis, while this cruel disease progressively eliminates their ability to move, eat, and ultimately breathe on their own. Almost 80 years since baseball great Lou Gehrig brought national attention to ALS, there is still no cure and there are no survivors.

Mission Statement

To discover treatments and a cure for ALS, and to serve, advocate for, and empower people affected by ALS to live their lives to the fullest.

Description

For more than 40 years, the Greater Philadelphia Chapter has worked to improve quality of life for people with ALS by supporting vital ALS research, providing care and services to patients and their families, and engaging in advocacy to secure policies that promote ways to better manage, and eventually end, this devastating disease.

The Greater Philadelphia Chapter serves more than 1,200 people each year and covers a broad service area that encompasses the eastern half of Pennsylvania, central and southern New Jersey, and all of Delaware. We are honored to be the principal charity of the Philadelphia Phillies. Through this special partnership, which began more than three decades ago, the Phillies have raised over $17.7 million in support of our efforts to strike out ALS.
