Paddle Assistant

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Duties could include but are not limited to:

1. Canoe program assistance on Village creek, Neches River, Pine Island Bayou

a. Arrive 30 minutes prior to the program

i. Coordinates with the interpretive ranger scheduled to lead the canoe program.

ii. Assists ranger to get all supplies and safety equipment ready for the trip

iii. Systematically equips visitors and assists them with launching the boats


b. During the presentation, is mindful of visitor safety and keeping the group together


c. After the program

i. Works with the ranger to collect, clean, and put away equipment

ii. Puts away and secures the boats


2. Kayak Youth paddle program

a. Arrive at a designated time prior to the program in coordination with the lead interpretive ranger

i. Gets equipment, safety equipment, kayaks, trailer, and vehicle ready


b. At designated launching site

i. Equips visitors with equipment and assists with launching the kayaks


c. During the presentation, is mindful of visitor safety and keeping the group together


d. After the program

i. Works with the ranger to collect, clean, and put away equipment

ii. Returns kayaks to trailer, prepares vehicle, and assists with navigating back to Big Thicket Visitor Center


3. Paddle Clinics

a. Arrive at a designated time prior to the program in coordination with the lead interpretive ranger

i. Gets equipment, safety equipment, kayaks, canoes, booth materials, trailer, and vehicle ready


b. At designated launching site

i. Equips visitors with equipment and assists with launching the kayaks and prepares booth/display materials


c. During the presentation, is mindful of visitor safety and keeping the group together


d. After the program

i. Works with the ranger to collect, clean, and put away equipment

ii. Returns the kayaks to trailer, prepares vehicle, and assists with navigating back to Big Thicket Visitor Center
