Compeer is a friendship program servicing members in Northampton and Lehigh Counties who are in stable mental health recovery. Stable mental health recovery indicates the individual is attending regular mental health appointments and taking medication as prescribed. They have not had a recent hospitalization and have no history of being aggressive toward others. We carefully screen our members to make sure they are in a good place in their treatment and are ready for this type of program. Most of our members do not have many natural supports in the community such as family and friends and are need of a friend they can spend time with.
Our program allows us to match volunteers from the community with our members who are in need of a friend. The volunteers are asked to spend at least 4 hours a month. This can be done once a week or every other week. It’s based on the volunteer’s schedule and that of the member. The volunteer and the member can do anything they are both interested in as long as it doesn’t involve drinking, using drugs or illegal activity. Some things our volunteers do with their friend is go for a walk, go out for a cup of coffee, play a card game, window shopping, local community events and much more.
Volunteers are required to be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. We do ask that each volunteer complete criminal background checks and a motor vehicle history (we pay for these). There is about 2-4 hours of training prior to being matched.
