ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Headquarters

Purpose:
This position supports the National Headquarters (NHQ) Biomedical Services (BIO) Scientific Affairs department. This opportunity requires participation in in-person activities and/or performs work in a Red Cross facility located at 9315 Gaither Road Gaithersburg, MD 20877. The Volunteer Laboratory Technician performs the physical or administrative/physical tasks involved in the receiving, storing, and distributing of materials, parts, supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Receives, unpacks, and checks goods received against received shipping documents (including tubes, plasma units) and check DIN against paperwork. (not entering)
  2. Stores (in racks/bins) blood samples associated with research studies within 24 hours from receipt, monitored by employees.
  3. Maintains and disposes of lab samples, including bio-hazardous samples at employee direction.
  4. Maintains records and clean room environment to comply with regulatory requirements, Good Manufacturing Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.
  5. Processes laboratory samples using high-throughput (aliquoting) liquid-handling system: aliquoting sample into clean, pre-labeled tubes, using the liquid handling system.
  6. May pull samples in inventory to be prepared for shipment to other agencies/vendors for special revenue-generating projects.
  7. May pull samples from walk in freezers and refrigerators.
Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus technical certificate/training in science or science background
  • Minimum 1 year experience in laboratory setting
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 40 pounds.
    • Good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.
    • Overall mobility is essential.
  • Ability to wear lab coats, gloves, and face shields (provided by Red Cross), long pants and closed-toe shoes. Will wear a coat (provided by the SSO) when working in refrigerators and walk in freezers.
  • Attention to detail, accurate documentation, and good decision-making skills.
  • Ability to use/learn a wide variety of lab or medical equipment.
  • Ability to use a computer and applicable software for sustained periods of time.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, including Excel.
  • Ability to work on a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Work Conditions: Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards including cold environments like refrigerators and walk in freezers. Exposure levels are based on the essential functions as stated in this position description; however, in some instances, variances may occur due to the applicable nature of this position within a particular work site. Therefore, the work site may determine the exposure level to be greater than or less than the below stated level. This position is an OSHA exposure determination: 1 in view of the fact that the position requires the incumbent work under conditions where the potential exists for the incumbent to make contact with blood or blood components as a result of splashes, spills, and/or needlesticks.
