Become a Member of Our Activation Squad

In support of the opening of the new Capital Jewish Museum, its exhibitions, programs, and Community Action Lab the Capital Jewish Museum is recruiting Activation Volunteers. Volunteers will work independently for short, visitor-driven interactions with content, themes, and exhibition interactives in the museum galleries. They will also work in Community Action Lab, the Museum’s hands-on maker and action space for children, families, and adults focused on experimental and experiential learning and engagement. OVERVIEW

In the Gallery

  • Facilitating meaningful visitor experiences within the museum gallery spaces.
  • Create a space of belonging for diverse visitors to deeply engage with exhibition components.
  • Facilitate inquiry-based learning and exploration through inviting visitors to participate in the exhibition interactives.
  • Invite visitors to share and listening to their stories, reflections, and experiences.
  • Encourage self-reflection and interaction among visitors exploring the galleries.

In the Community Action Lab

  • Facilitating meaningful visitor experiences
  • Create a space of belonging for diverse visitors to more deeply engage with and explore the themes and values discussed in the museum exhibitions.
  • Facilitate inquiry-based learning and exploration through interactive Lab ACT-ivities that incorporate play, critical thinking, creative expression, and discovery.
  • Encourage self-reflection and interactions among lab visitors to pursue social action initiatives beyond the museum inspired by their museum experience and lab resources.
  • Assisting with daily operations in the Community Action Lab
  • Prepare the space for the Lab ACT-ivity of the day.
  • Regularly tidy up the Lab and the activity materials throughout the day and between visitors.
  • Answer questions related to the completion of the Lab ACT-ivity
  • Engage with visitors to help them interact with the ACT-ivities and facilitate creativity, reflection, inquiry, and conversation.
  • Supporting core programmatic and educational offerings
  • Setup and take down the space for a variety of programs and events (including but not limited to): Museum After Hours, Maker Mornings, Family Days, Storytime, Nights at the Round Table etc).
  • Check in and orient program attendees
  • Assist with program execution, answering questions, wayfinding and directing visitors, tidying up and resetting activities and materials throughout the event.

IF YOU EXCEL AT AND ENJOY

  • Interacting with diverse audiences, age groups, and learning styles
  • Facilitating reflection, inquiry, and critical and creative thinking (without telling visitors what to think or how to engage)
  • Ascertaining visitors’ preferred exhibition interaction preferences.

IF YOU HAVE

  • Experience working in an interactive, informal education space
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • An interest in local history, Jewish culture and values, and social action.

IF YOU ARE ABLE TO

  • Commit to at least two four-hour shifts per month (with weekend availability)
  • Handle frequent walking, standing, bending, and lifting (15 pounds or less)

ELIGIBILITY

  • All volunteers must be 18 years or older.
  • All volunteers are required to pass a background check and show proof of vaccination against COVID-19.
  • All volunteers must be able to attend training sessions from March - May 2023.
  • All volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of 2 4-hour shifts per month (with weekend availability).
  • All volunteers must be able to commit to at least one year of service (June 2023 - June 2024).

TRAINING AND EVALUATION

  • Prospective Activation Squad Volunteers are required to attend up to 24 hours of training sessions from March - May 2023.
  • All volunteers are subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • During this period volunteers undergo two formal - at the completion of their training and 3 months into their service.
  • In addition, all volunteers undergo a formal review annually.
  • The probationary evaluations and annual review determine a volunteer’s eligibility to continue with the Capital Jewish Museum
