Becoming a ProMedica Hospice Volunteer

We consider the chance to be involved in the lives of our patients and families both a sacred opportunity and a privilege. The love, respect and care our hospice volunteers provide are vitally important to our patients' overall well-being during challenging times.

When you become a hospice volunteer, we will provide you with a detailed orientation to the hospice program, so you will fully understand our caring philosophy and goals and have the skills needed to assist patients and their families. As a hospice volunteer, you can donate as much or as little of your time as you desire. The duties vary so that you find an area or service that is uniquely suited to you.

To find out more about our Hospice Volunteer Program, contact Tiffany at (316) 895-1875 or tiffany.zarate@promedica.org.

Hospice Doesn’t Mean Giving Up Hope

Volunteer - GIVING YOUR TIME -We consider our involvement with patients a sacred opportunity and a privilege to be in their lives. We depend on our hospice volunteers to help us provide the love, respect and care patients and their families need.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteers offer support, companionship and practical, compassionate help. Some interact directly with patients and families. Others prefer to work behind the scenes in the office setting. As a volunteer, you help determine which tasks you’re best suited to perform.

THE TASKS OF VOLUNTEERS MAY INCLUDE:
  • Helping with office support tasks at the agency
  • Running errands for patients and families
  • Reading, or providing a comforting touch
  • Playing or singing soothing music to patients
  • Keeping vigil with patients in their final hours
Vets-to-Vets Program Providing special veteran volunteer support to patients who are veterans. No one understands the questions and concerns of a U.S. military veteran more than a fellow veteran or active duty personnel. That’s why we have developed the Vets-to-Vets program, in which volunteers with similar backgrounds can meet with and assist in the care of U.S. military veteran patients. WHY ARE VETERAN VOLUNTEERS IMPORTANT TO US?
  • Veterans share a common language, code of conduct and honor which may allow for a better match between patients and volunteers.
  • The culture of stoicism and societal reactions can discourage veterans from sharing their war experiences with non-veterans. When one veteran talks to another, sharing stories supports life-review and healing and secrecy may dissolve.

About Gentiva-Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice

Location:

2872 North Ridge Road, Suite 122, Wichita, KS 67205, US

Mission Statement

The mission of Gentiva-Heartland Hospice is to provide quality care to patients with a limited life expectancy, as well as support to their caregivers. The quality of life for those we serve is enhanced through palliative and specialized supportive care designed to meet the physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patients and caregivers. Hospice care is provided by an interdisciplinary team utilizing an approach to the care delivered to patients either in their own home or extended care facility; working cooperatively with area health care providers and other community resources. Heartland Hospice strives to provide care to all who are eligible and need hospice care irrespective of ability to pay. Hospice care is a promise....a promise to patients who are facing the most difficult time of life, when choices seem few, and the patient and family situation is most fragile.

Description

As a Hospice volunteer, you will be orientated to the Hospice Program so you can understand our philosophy and goals. This will enable you to have the skills needed to assist patients and their families. You will not be asked to become a family counselor, just a non-judgmental listener and friend.

As a volunteer you will love the sense of self-satisfaction you will receive from bringing special pleasure to someone's life. You will enjoy learning from the vast experience and colorful life of our patients and their families.

Also, if you are a member of a special interest group (a choir, drama club, garden club, etc.) you may want to volunteer your group for a special project or activity. Become an integral part of the Heartland team by becoming a Heartland Hospice Volunteer.
