The MMA is looking for volunteers to help in our historical gift shop! Volunteering in our gift shop can be a rewarding experience for individuals who are interested in history, enjoy working with people, and want to contribute to a meaningful cause.

As a volunteer in a gift shop, you would have the opportunity to work in a unique environment that showcases and sells items related to the history and culture of the local area. The gift shop may offer a variety of merchandise, such as books, souvenirs, jewelry, and other items that are associated with the historical homes or museums in the area.
Your role as a volunteer may include assisting customers with their purchases, handling transactions, and answering questions about the merchandise. You may also be responsible for restocking shelves, organizing merchandise displays, and keeping the gift shop tidy.
Working in a gift shop that is part of a historical non-profit for historical homes can also provide opportunities to learn about the local history and culture. You may have the chance to interact with visitors from all over the world and to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of historical homes on the community.

Overall, volunteering in a gift shop that is part of a historical non-profit for historical homes can be a fulfilling experience that allows you to contribute to an important cause while gaining valuable skills and knowledge.

About MCLOUGHLIN MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION

Location:

PO BOX 3261, OREGON CITY, OR 97045, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the McLoughlin Memorial Association is to assist in the promotion of Dr. John McLoughlin and his associates through education, interpretation, preservation, respect, and appreciation of our heritage.

Description

The McLoughlin House stands today as a reminder of the great contribution Dr. John McLoughlin made to the settlement of the Oregon Country. In 1909, it was threatened with demolition, but a group of concerned local citizens formed the McLoughlin Memorial Association to preserve and protect the house and the legacy of Dr. McLoughlin. They moved the house from its original location by the river up to its present location atop the bluff, restored it, and turned the house into a museum. The McLoughlin Memorial Association continues to actively support the McLoughlin House, in partnership with the National Park Service.

In 1941, the McLoughlin House was designated by Congress as a National Historic Site (the first in the West). It was added to the National Park System in 2003, as a unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

The McLoughlin Memorial Association also manages the William L. Homes House, also known as the Rose Farm, in Oregon City. The Holmes House was constructed by William and Louisa Holmes, two early Oregon pioneers who arrived in Oregon in 1843. The Holmes House is the oldest American home in Oregon City and was the scene of early government meetings and many social events. The first territorial governor, Joseph Lane, gave his 1849 inaugural address from the balcony of the Rose Farm, and the celebrants gathered on the lawn below.

The Holmes' 640-acre Donation Land Claim was nicknamed the 'Rose Farm’ by friends and neighbors because of the many roses Louisa planted in the garden.
