Description of Position:
This position supports the Regional Disaster Cycle Services department. Ensures timely activation and monitoring of local and regional Disaster Action Team (DAT) responses. The Duty Officer supports the DAT program either at the chapter/territory or region level.

Disaster duty officers are a lifeline to temporary assistance during a disaster. Volunteer Duty Officers are responsible for dispatching Red Cross volunteers to meet with families impacted by home fires and other disasters so they can provide temporary relief such as a safe place to stay, food and clothing. This volunteer opportunity is virtual and done from your home. Training is provided. Volunteers should be comfortable using online systems and must have access to a cell phone and computer.

Key Responsibilities:
* Liaison position between local authorities and responding in-field Red Cross personnel; back-up staff member always available
* May determine if Red Cross action is required; may decide if Red Cross will respond via DAT
* Dispatch DAT members and monitor the response to ensure appropriate resources are made available
* Activate Disaster Health Services, Disaster Mental Health, and Disaster Spiritual Care, Public Affairs when requested
* Documents incoming disaster notification and creates and verifies events in RC Respond
* May be required to monitor activity across multiple DAT responses
* Notify Chapter and Regional staff of significant events, and contribute to an Initial Incident Report, when appropriate
* Attends regularly scheduled team/DAT meetings as required by Chapter/Region
* Support and trains new Duty Officers

Qualifications:
* Demonstrated leadership and communication skills
* Ability to remotely monitor and track details of DAT responses
* Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in complex and stressful situations
* Proficient with Red Cross systems and online interfaces
* Sit and/or stand for minimum two-hour periods
* Work for long periods on computer
* Speak clearly on the phone and in person
* Requires strong communication skills and reliable phone & internet service

Qualifying Questions:
* Are you comfortable using multiple forms of communication such as email, cell phone, text message, and other technology and communications platforms necessary to perform this role?
* Do you have access to reliable telephone and internet access on a regular basis?
* Are you organized and flexible, and do you like to talk on the phone?
* Are you comfortable dispatching volunteers, providing information necessary to assist clients impacted by a disaster?

Time Commitment:
Complete a minimum of one 4 or 6-hour on-call shift per week (16-20 hours per month) on a reoccurring basis

Training:
Approximately 10-12 hours of initial online training followed by mentoring and on the job training
