Volunteer Haitian Creole Interpreter

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Rian Immigrant Center is seeking volunteer interpreters fluent in Haitian Creole to support Rian’s legal services team at their monthly Forms Workshops (mix of in-person and virtual) and for individual consults over the phone/via Zoom. Interpreters should be fluent or native speakers. Rian attorneys will be helping clients file applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and are in need of interpreters to assist them in doing so. Volunteers will be asked to provide their availability to better aid Rian’s attorneys in their efforts. All interpretation work will occur on weekdays during normal business hours. Currently there are immediate and ongoing opportunities available for volunteers with a fluency in oral interpretation and/or written translation for Haitian Creole. This is an ideal opportunity for someone interested in using their language skills to help serve in their community, but do not have a lot of time to regularly volunteer.

TIME COMMITMENT: 2-4 hours a week

RESPONSIBILITIES/ REQUIREMENTS

  • Interpreting for attorneys, law students, and DOJ Accredited Representative staff live on-camera in video conference meetings (such as WhatsApp, Ring Central, Zoom, Google Meet, etc)
  • Interpreting for attorneys, law students, and DOJ Accredited Representative staff at in-person workshops


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingual (required) in English and Haitian Creole
  • Must have access to a home computer or smartphone, reliable internet and privacy for sensitive conversations if participating in Virtual Forms Workshops
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Experience with immigrant/refugee population preferred but not required
