Did you know more than 60% of low-income children have no age-appropriate books at home? Bright Star Books works to end this book ownership gap by collecting new and gently used children’s books, and getting them to limited-resource families in Greater Akron.

Within the book donations we receive, we are in need of skilled volunteers to provide clerical assistance to our organization in order to sort books. With over 270,000 books donated to low-resource families in Greater Akron, we would love your assistance in continuing to put children's books in the hands of low-income children!

You will be a critical part of our mission to provide books from families that have outgrown them to the children who need them most!

About Bright Star Books, Inc.

8893 Langston Court, Macedonia, OH 44056, US

Mission Statement

The mission of Bright Star Books, Inc. is to promote a culture of reading by increasing access to and ownership of books for limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region. We aim to do this at the earliest possible age to ensure children grow up habituated to the potential of books as sources of learning and joy.

Bright Star Books aims to compliment and collaborate with existing early childhood development and literacy organizations in the Greater Akron region to build a sustainable community network that brings books into the homes of limited-resource children and gives every family the chance to develop a lasting love of reading and learning. Utilizing the latest developmental research, and embracing a model where community participation, capacity building, and research are critical, we seek to identify and fill gaps in existing programs so that every child - regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic status or cultural capital - has the resources needed to grow up in an environment where developing a love for reading is possible.

Bright Star Books gives books these ways:

-We build libraries in transitional housing shelters, so young children displaced by poverty or violence can still experience the joy of reading;

-We give children╩╝s libraries to teen mothers with limited access to books;

-We partner with service agencies like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) of Summit County to distribute gently used, developmentally appropriate children╩╝s books through their clinics, serving thousands of low-income women and children from pregnancy to age five.
