Join us to:

  • Make 600 sandwiches for those experiencing homelessness
  • Cut blue jeans into pieces that will be used to make 25 shoes for children who suffer from a crippling foot parasite called jiggers
  • Sew pillowcases for children living in extreme poverty at Yurok Indian Reservation in California
  • Create 200 nature and craft kits for Gammelgarden Museum of Scandia
  • Tie fleece blankets for pediatric cancer patients
  • Color pictures for seniors who are in nursing homes or homebound; veterans; and servicemen and women who are stationed throughout the world
  • Sew pinless diapers for newborns in third-world countries
  • Assemble activity kits for youth with cancer
  • Complete kits for girls in third-world countries so they can go to school when they have their period
  • Knit and crochet baby hats and blankets for newborns in third-world countries
  • Create fleece blankets for kittens, cats, and dogs at Northwoods Humane Society
  • Assemble bluebird houses to create a bluebird trail in Scandia
  • Write letters or draw pictures for residents of Christian Community Home
  • Make and take home wildflower seed balls
  • Make and take home homemade bird suet and seed mixes

We also will collect:

  • Items for activity kits for children and teens with cancer (e.g., activity/coloring books, crayons, markers, sticker books, MadLibs, gel pens, puzzles, and travel-sized games)
  • New or very gently used clothing for youth and adults for Valley Outreach in Stillwater (e.g., shorts, t-shirts, short-sleeve shirts, sandals, swimsuits, light jackets, tennis shoes, summer hats, polo shirts)
  • Empty plastic pill bottles with labels removed for Matthew 25: Ministries
  • Items for Gammelgarden Museum of Scandia (e.g., gift cards to purchase items for youth programs (Walmart, amazon.com, Menards, Joanns, and Prairie Restorations), 20 baskets with handles [to hold 3 strawberry plants], oversized lawn games, antique/old children’s games [jacks, marbles], items for Girls & Dolls tea parties [china sets, china teapots, sets of 4-6 new cloth napkins, highchairs for dolls, white gloves in children’s sizes, and new rectangular tablecloths])
  • New LEGO sets for children and teens with cancer
  • Items for Northwoods Humane Society (Wyoming, MN) (e.g., dry puppy food, dry kitten food, pate style canned cat food, canned kitten food, clay cat litter [non-clumping], puppy milk replacer, cat toys, soft dog treats, disinfectant wipes, and laundry detergent [liquid, HE])
  • Items for personal care and Household cleaning for Family Pathways Food Shelf (e.g., deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo [full size], conditioner [full size], body lotion, multi-pack of soap, window cleaner, surface cleaner, floor cleaner, dish soap, and dishwasher soap)
  • Lead fishing tackle
  • Items for Wildlife Science Center (Stacy, MN)(e.g., left-handed welding gloves, thermometers, sponges, scour pads, spray bottles, large poop scoopers, kitchen shears, metal food dishes, contractor bags [3 mm thick], and Ziploc bags [any size/brand])
  • Non-perishable foodfor the Scandia-Marine Food Shelf. All items should have expiration dates of September 2023 and beyond
  • Pop tabs
  • Eyeglasses- without cases
  • Hearing aids
  • Baby blankets for newbornsin third-world countries. The blankets need to be acrylic or cotton yarn and be 30"x30"
  • Aluminum cans for recycling
  • New or very gently used multilingual books or books featuring diverse characters and themesfor ages pre-K to fifth grade (e.g., board books, picture books, easy chapter books, middle-grade chapter books)
  • Used digital cameras - for the youth photography program at Marine Mills Folk School
  • Plastic bags
  • Financial donations for:
    • Sponsoring two puppies for Leader Dogs for the Blind
    • Supporting cataract surgeries to restore sight through SightFirst
    • Supporting Scandia-Marine Lions' local programs and services

New This Year:

  • Free haircuts by Scandia Hair Design for those donating 8"+ of hair to Children with Hair Loss
  • Free glucose blood checks for Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes. Nurses from Lakeview Hospital will perform blood checks on anyone at the event wanting their glucose level checked

Mission Statement

The foundation provides assistance relating to the Minnesota communities of Scandia, Marine on St Croix, and May Township and communities bordering those entities and communities served by Lions Clubs International by: improving education achievement for all learners in area schools, assisting qualified learners through college scholarships, providing relief to families affected by illness or disasters, providing assistance to charitable activities relating to Lions Clubs International, and providing assistance to other non-profits and activities otherwise aiding these communities and their residents.

Description

The SML Foundation is a registered 501 c3 non-profit entity within the Scandia Marine Lions Club. The goals of the foundations are to continue the efforts of the Lions Club to benefit the communities that we serve. In past fiscal years, the Scandia Marine Lions has contributed over $80,000 towards community needs. The foundation welcomes donations from both individuals and businesses. All donations are returned to the community in the form of grants. Requests for Foundations grants are reviewed by the Foundation Board of Directors for approval.

Our Vision was to create a foundation within our community that serves current needs and builds on the future. Tax deducitble donations from community members like you will stay in the community. Help support local families in need, support educational grants and scholarships, provide ongoing support to our veterans, and more. Regardless of where you donate, you gift will make a difference.

  • Spend 15 minutes or up to 2 hours volunteering (from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). From 12-1 there will be a free lunch for volunteers.
