MVA is a statewide organization focused on the expansion of research-based, high-quality mentoring in Virginia. VISTA Members will help further our mission to provide training and sustainable support systems to mentors and mentoring programs to increase the quality and quantity of mentoring for Virginia's youth.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America), the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps, is a national service program offering members a modest living allowance in exchange for their commitment of a year of service while they build a permanent infrastructure to help alleviate poverty and find community self-sustainability.
MVA is seeking to place an AmeriCorps VISTA Member with the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline (GSVSC) in Roanoke, VA. GSVSC serves girls in kindergarten through 12th grade with programs focusing on STEM, life skills, entrepreneurship, and outdoor adventures. For 110 years, the Girl Scouts have encouraged leadership development in girls. The organization’s programs are designed for Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities and since its foundation has contributed to building strength and confidence in thousands of girls in the locality.
Qualifications: Undergraduate degree or some college experience encouraged, preferably Girl Scout alum; applicants should be enthusiastic, committed to the ethic of service, and interested in serving in Virginia. Qualities sought after include, good organizational skills; communication and writing skills are a plus; ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds; self-initiative and past experience in volunteering, mentoring, and/or within the nonprofit sector.
Benefits of AmeriCorps VISTA Service: The VISTA Member is paid an annual living stipend of 10% above the local poverty rate, estimated at $16,200 based on the Richmond location rate. AmeriCorps VISTAs will receive a $6,895 education award or a $1,800 cash stipend of appreciation at the end of a year of service. Learn more about the Segal Education Award. AmeriCorps VISTA is the only AmeriCorps program that allows members to earn federal non-competitive eligibility (NCE), giving members an edge in the federal hiring process upon completion of their service year. The AmeriCorps VISTA position is full-time and yearlong, with a possibility of second and third-year extensions. All compensation is provided by AmeriCorps.
