Muscular Dystrophy Association is the #1 voluntary health organization in the United States for people living with muscular dystrophy, ALS, and related neuromuscular diseases. For over 70 years, MDA has led the way in accelerating research, advancing care, and advocating for the support of our families.

Each summer, MDA provides summer camp for youth, ages 8-17, diagnosed with neuromuscular diseases. MDA Summer Camp is a magical place where anything is possible - from swimming, to zip-lining and horseback riding to dancing under a disco ball and gaining valuable life skills. Throughout the country, hundreds of volunteers serve as counselors and medical team members during a week-long, overnight camp to create a safe, fun, and memorable experience for all participants. MDA Summer Camps wouldn’t be possible without people like you.

As a volunteer, you will support campers as they participate in adaptive camp experiences, games, dances, mealtime and more. You will provide assistance with activities of daily living, which may include things like dressing, bathing, transfers, feeding, etc., as well as be their friend and confidence builder.

Job duties in include:

  • Create a fun, safe and inclusive environment for campers.
  • Act as a companion and encourager of campers, promoting strong self-esteem.
  • Assist campers, as needed, with camp activities and activities of daily living. Work with cabin leaders, program directors or other staff to meet the needs of the campers.
  • Assure campers are properly supervised at all times.
  • Have fun and participate in daily activities with enthusiasm.
  • Set a good example to campers and others by upholding camp rules.
  • Set a high standard of cooperation.
  • Completed online application through UltraCamp system
  • Criminal Background Check through Sterling Volunteers
  • Interview with MDA Staff
  • Two Professional References
  • Participate in trainings both in-advance of camp and upon arrival to Camp
    * Includes training on HIPAA, Risk Management, and the MDA program

Other Requirements:

  • Completed online application through UltraCamp system
  • Criminal Background Check through Sterling Volunteers
  • Interview with MDA Staff
  • Two Professional References
  • Participate in trainings both in-advance of camp and upon arrival to Camp
    * Includes training on HIPAA, Risk Management, and the MDA program

*Volunteers need to provide record of physical examination completed within 12 months of camp, a copy of insurance card, and immunization record (including proof of COVID vaccination).
