ABOUT THE PROJECT:


Join the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut in making a difference in the lives of children and families in North Hartford. We are seeking motivated individuals to help us expand our early literacy initiatives, United Way Readers and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, with the goal of increasing the number of students who are ready to learn and reading proficiently by fourth grade.


As a member of our team, you'll be part of a model that is working to end poverty in North Hartford and help build community capacity to support school readiness, early literacy, and parent engagement. You'll work with school staff, parents, residents, and community organizations to provide an integrated social services pipeline and make community resources easier to access.

ABOUT YOU:


This is a unique opportunity to learn about the non-profit sector and gain experience working in the community engaging with parents and residents, early childhood service providers, community-based organizations, etc. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, you'll be crucial to the success of the North Hartford Ascend Pipeline, and contribute to systemic changes that will the lives of those in our community.




RESPONSIBILITIES


We are looking to select four VISTAs:


two members are responsible for building capacity of United Way Readers programming (one in each school);

one member will operationalize the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program to replicate the model;

and one member will work with the community to solicit feedback and improve access to/participation in literacy services/supports.

Essential duties include: asset mapping/research, recruitment and community outreach; improve public awareness efforts around early literacy; create a model for service delivery that is sustainable and replicable through ongoing community engagement/feedback; evaluate program effectiveness and community impact; and ensure proper documentation to successfully deploy programming elsewhere.


Members will receive a living allowance, education benefits to reduce student loan debt, professional development opportunities to start a career/return to the workforce, relocation benefits, and childcare subsidies.
